Black Friday – Is it all a scam?

Black Friday is probably the most hyped-up shopping day of the entire year. People all over the globe flock to shop windows, no matter the weather, in order to take home the best possible deals on offer.

But, is it really worth getting up at 5am to stand in the pouring rain? A recent survey by Which? suggests that you’d be better off staying tucked up in bed.

The survey reveals that just 1 in 20 Black Friday deals are genuine. The consumer group price checked 83 items on sale on Black Friday last year and found that nearly all were cheaper or available for the same price at other times of the year.

It’s not just in-store offers that are shams, but online companies are just as likely to rip you off. The Which? survey revealed that Amazon put its Echo (2nd Gen) on offer as 39% cheaper on Black Friday, when it had been cheaper on at least 13 occasions before that date.

The Which? price research covered the six months before and after last year’s Black Friday. It found that just four of the 83 products surveyed were cheaper on Black Friday than at other times of the year.

Which? found no evidence that retailers were breaking sales laws. Rather, consumers were being confused by offers that might not be as good as they sounded.

So, be scrupulous – don’t be fooled by a 50% discount sticker. Check your prices and maybe even hold off a couple of months until you purchase that 4K TV – the price might just go down.
