The body of a missing man was discovered in Brighton just hours after a large-scale search effort to locate him had been called off.

Emergency services combed the coastline off Brighton beach starting at 7:15 am yesterday (September 24) following reports of a man in distress in the sea near the Palace Pier.

Helicopters, lifeboats, and even a specialized coastguard aircraft were mobilized to assist in the search, but the operation was officially suspended at approximately 3 pm.

Later that evening, emergency services were observed at the beach near West Street, where a body was found.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police provided the following statement: “Sadly, the body of a man was recovered from the sea in Brighton on Sunday night.
