A group of Brighton artists is mobilising to transform a stretch of disused railway arches by the i360 into The Arches Vault — a new, permanent space for artist-led exhibitions, ethical sales, and inclusive cultural production.
Led by Mid Street Lab, the grassroots Kemptown initiative known for its bold, community-first approach to culture, the project aims to build a creative space that doesn’t just display art but grows it from the ground up.
“This isn’t just a venue. It’s a way to make sure art in Brighton reflects the city, all of it,” says founder Jean Wachter.
A Personal Mission with Public Potential.
Jean founded Mid Street Lab two years ago, using his own savings after leaving a corporate career during the pandemic.
“I turned 40, became a father, and watched the world shrink, politically, culturally, emotionally. As a working-class, racialised male, I didn’t see myself or my community in the arts curation spaces around. So I built one,” he shares.
Since then, the Lab has supported over 30 artists, mainly women, hosted 50+ workshops and exhibitions, and become a trusted hub for creativity, care, and connection.
The Vault will expand that mission, adding a seafront-facing space to showcase and sell work, host activations, and offer affordable access to the public. Together, the Lab and the Vault form a full creative loop: from artist development to audience engagement, rooted in equity.
Building Culture, Not Just Space
Creative Director Pacheanne Handerson, newly appointed to help lead the next phase, are shaping the Vault’s programming around experimentation, dialogue, and visibility.
“We’re losing spaces where artists can fail, try, grow. The Vault isn’t just about putting art on walls, it’s about reclaiming space to build culture that’s alive,” they say.
With key partners like Brighton Dome, Sussex University, and Coastal Catalyst already involved, the team believes the project could become a model for what artist-led cultural infrastructure looks like in Brighton and beyond.
A Rare Chance to Help Shape the Future.
The bid for the arches was successful with the City Hove Council but the clock is ticking. The team has less than 10 working days to raise £6,000 to secure the lease and begin the fit-out.
They’re now calling on Brighton’s established creative community and those who believe in cultural access to help.

“This is a chance to attach your name to a space that will be part of Brighton’s cultural fabric for the next decade,” says Jean. “It’s not another pop-up or gallery, it’s a long-term act of care.”
As artists and organisers across the city come together, one thing is clear: The Arches Vault isn’t just about making room for art. It’s about making room for everyone.
