Brighton has officially been named the best city in England for food lovers, following a comprehensive new study commissioned by train operator LNER. The research, which analysed 71 towns and cities across England and Scotland, celebrates Brighton’s thriving culinary scene, high density of top-rated restaurants, and unmatched food experiences.

The study explored five key travel themes—family-friendly activities, sustainability, culture, outdoor experiences, and food—drawing on data from a range of trusted sources including Companies House, the MICHELIN Guide, Yelp, Numbeo, and Instagram. All metrics were population-adjusted and weighted to provide a fair and robust comparison, with one top city in England and Scotland selected for each category.

Brighton stood out as the ultimate foodie destination in England, securing its place at the top of the rankings thanks to:

  • The highest number of MICHELIN-starred restaurants per capita in England, with 17 in total

  • A diverse and vibrant food culture, offering the most food and drink experiences per capita

  • A massive selection of 907 restaurants, showcasing cuisines from around the world

  • Exceptional social media popularity, boasting the highest number of Instagram posts per capita about food—over 93,200 in total

  • A typical three-course meal for two averaging £70, reflecting Brighton’s reputation for premium dining experiences

From beachfront seafood and independent cafes to global street food and fine dining, Brighton’s food scene offers something for every palate and occasion. The city’s blend of quality, variety, and atmosphere continues to attract both locals and visitors in search of unforgettable culinary adventures.
