| Brighton & Hove City Council has been recognised with a top Defence award for its outstanding support of the Armed Forces community.
The Gold award in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme is the highest badge of honour for employers who champion veterans, reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers and military families in the workplace. The Armed Forces Covenant, introduced in 2011, focuses on helping the Armed Forces community to get the same access to government and commercial services as the public. It outlines the principles of removing disadvantages faced by the community in areas such as education, housing In March, Councillor Amanda Grimshaw, Armed Forces Champion for Brighton & Hove, signed an updated version of the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging the city’s continued support to our Armed Forces community. To support employees who are also reservists, Brighton & Hove City Council provides up to 10 days’ paid leave (pro rata) to attend training, under our special and carer’s leave policy. The council also supports the national Heroes Welcome scheme. By promoting forces-friendly policies and raising awareness, the council aims to be a frontrunner in the nationwide effort to understand the complex issues that can impact reservists and to provide the support needed.
