Brighton & Hove City Council have announced their ambition to make Brighton & Hove carbon neutral by 2030 as part of their new council plan for the next three years.

Tackling the climate emergency is extremely important and becoming carbon neutral is a great way to do it, but how are they going to pull it off?

Here are the promises made in the sustainability section of their new plan on the council website:

“We will:

  • become a carbon neutral city by 2030
  • create and improve public open spaces
  • reduce, re-use and recycle
  • develop an active and sustainable travel network
  • promote and protect biodiversity”

Here’s a look at some of the actions the council will be taking to ensure carbon neutrality by 2030:

Council Housing

The council has revealed it’s plans to build sustainable council housing. This includes using recycling building materials that are no longer needed for the project in order to cut down on waste. The council has also pledged to spend triple on fuel efficiency measures and solar panels for council houses.

Other Housing Initiatives

The council is looking support to low-carbon housing and sustainable energy. To do this, they plan to make bulk purchases of energy saving resources and redistribute them at low prices to residents and others. They have also said they will support community energy projects and district heat networks.

The Council Itself

There has also been a pledge to make changes within the council, which includes reducing co2 emissions from their properties and vehicles. They also hope to utilise energy efficient technology.

While discussing their plan, the council emphasised the importance of the opinions and contributions of young people and small businesses:

“We want to involve young people so we meet the expectations of the next generation. We will work with visionary small businesses to identify ways of making the city carbon neutral.”
