There are wins that feel important and then there are afternoons that seem to capture everything a football club wants to be. Brighton & Hove Albion produced one of those at the Amex on Saturday, dismantling reigning Premier League champions Arsenal 3-0 in a performance that was as impressive for its intensity as it was for its finishing.
The victory came on a particularly significant day for the club, which was celebrating its 125th anniversary, and the occasion was given the kind of ending Brighton supporters could scarcely have scripted. Wearing a special commemorative kit, Albion overwhelmed an Arsenal side that had arrived with a perfect start to the season and ambitions of making it eight wins from eight.

The opening goal arrived after 31 minutes and was a fitting one for Pascal Groß, who has become increasingly influential during Brighton’s excellent start. Given space outside the Arsenal penalty area, the midfielder produced a superb strike that beat David Raya and sent the Amex into celebration.
Arsenal had little time to recover. Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage just before half-time, driving a long-range effort into the corner after Brighton had continued to put pressure on the champions. It was a devastating moment for Arsenal, particularly after Bukayo Saka had seen an effort saved only seconds earlier.
The third goal arrived nine minutes after the interval. Groß turned provider this time, delivering a corner that Chema Andrés attacked brilliantly, heading home on his first Premier League start for Brighton. The new signing’s goal completed an extraordinary afternoon.
What made the result particularly striking was that Brighton did not need overwhelming possession to control the game. Arsenal had around 60% of the ball, but Brighton’s pressing, speed and efficiency repeatedly caused problems. The Seagulls finished with 17 shots, while Arsenal managed 11, and Brighton could easily have added a fourth.
