This year commemorates the 125th anniversary of Brighton Palace Pier, an iconic landmark and the UK’s most bustling tourist attraction. However, the task of upholding this historic structure has become increasingly costly in recent years.
Over the past five years, the expenses associated with maintaining, repairing, and operating Brighton Palace Pier have surged by 31%, amounting to an additional £2.7 million. Consequently, the overall annual cost has escalated to £11.6 million.
In response to these mounting financial pressures, the Brighton Pier Group (BPG), which oversees the management of Brighton Palace Pier, has emphasized the critical role of an admission fee in addressing these challenges. This fee will play a pivotal role in meeting the unique demands of preserving the pier’s structural integrity and ensuring year-round operations.
Despite the financial burden, Brighton Palace Pier remains a magnet for tourists worldwide, contributing significantly to the city’s overall revenue. To maintain accessibility for local residents, holders of a Brighton Palace Pier local residents card will continue to enjoy free admission.

Established in 1889 and designated as a Grade II* listed landmark, Brighton Palace Pier holds a revered status as the “Queen of all Victorian piers.” Anne Ackord, CEO of Brighton acknowledged the substantial costs involved in maintaining the pier’s upkeep, stressing the importance of implementing a nominal admission fee for visitors outside the local area.
