Carlos Acosta Carmen Brighton 2026 will arrive at Theatre Royal Brighton from 29 April to 2 May — and by far it is one of the standout dance productions in the city’s spring season.
Brighton audiences are set for a thrilling experience as Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta brings his fiery adaptation of Carmen to the stage.
Performances run Wednesday to Saturday at 7:30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 2:30pm.
Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes, including interval.
The Story
The classic tale of a doomed love triangle — re-imagined with Cuban fire and extraordinary physicality.
Carmen is a free-spirited woman who lives by her own rules. Don José falls desperately in love with her and sacrifices everything. When the toreador Escamillo appears and captures Carmen’s attention, Don José’s love turns to violent jealousy — with tragic consequences.
At the centre of Acosta’s production is a figure not found in the original: the Bull.
A striking presence throughout the performance, the Bull acts as both Carmen’s destiny and the unseen force shaping every moment on stage — an addition that gives the production its own distinctive dramatic architecture.
This is a story driven not by plot — but by instinct, desire and inevitability.
Carlos Acosta’s Vision
Acosta on the production:
“Any creator of dance wants to make their own Carmen — it’s such a powerful story. It has everything.”
Betrayal. Desire. A love that destroys everything it touches. Acosta strips Carmen to its raw core — no period, no place, just three people and an ending that was always inevitable.
“This is a Carmen like no other. It has the Cuban influence, it has the classical element, it has the fusion that I came up with. Acosta Danza is part contemporary, part classical, part Cuban — and all of that is fused into Carmen.”
The score combines Bizet’s original with the 1967 Rodion Shchedrin Carmen Suite, alongside additional music from British composer Martin Yates and Cuban composers Denis Peralta and Yhovani Duarte.
The tavern scenes bring a distinctly flamenco energy — bottles thrown and caught, acrobatic sequences, and moments of raw physical intensity.
Acosta Danza at Ten
Acosta Danza brings this acclaimed production to the UK following its successful premiere in 2024.
Founded by Carlos Acosta in Havana in 2015, the company has become both a training ground for Cuban dancers and a globally touring ensemble. In 2026, it celebrates its tenth anniversary.
“When you go along this kind of pathway… you never know how the story is going to end — and suddenly we are celebrating ten years. It’s unbelievable.”
Carlos Acosta is also director of Birmingham Royal Ballet.
The Music and Movement
What makes this production particularly striking is the way it blends different movement languages into a single, cohesive performance. Classical ballet technique meets contemporary physicality, while flamenco influences bring rhythm and grounded intensity. The result is a style that feels both structured and instinctive — controlled, but never rigid.
This combination allows the story to be expressed not only through choreography, but through energy, tension and contrast on stage.
Should You Should See It?
This is not a traditional ballet. It is physical, theatrical and emotionally direct — a production that moves between precision and raw energy with complete control. It is a globally recognised dance company performing a story everyone knows — but in a way that feels entirely contemporary so yes it’s a must see.
