The planning application for a new community swimming pool at Withdean Sports Complex goes before councillors next week.

Plans for the new 5-lane, 25m community pool, with changing rooms, toilets and other facilities, will be considered by members of the council’s planning committee next Wednesday (3 December).

If approved, the new facility will be the first new publicly funded swimming pool built in the city for over 40 years.

Plans for the new facility were drawn up following a city-wide consultation with hundreds of residents attending drop-in sessions and having their say in our online survey.

Discussions were also held with representatives from local swimming clubs, community organisations, a local primary school, the council’s Healthy Lifestyles Team, Freedom Leisure and the national governing body, Swim England.

The new swimming pool has been designed to reduce environmental impact, support local biodiversity and create a healthy, energy-efficient building for future generations.

The pool will also be accessible and inclusive, enabling more people to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of swimming.

The £6.8 million project will be funded from a combination of section 106 developer contributions and capital borrowing
