Commuters across Brighton & Hove are being encouraged to get pedalling next week and bike it into work.

Brighton & Hove City Council is making Thursday 7 August a Cycle to Work Day.

Whether you’re heading to your office, business, charity, company, school, or you’re visiting friends or family, it’s a great opportunity to switch four wheels for two.

To encourage people to cycle into work, the council has events and activities lined up for the day, including a workplace photo competition, bike breakfasts and a special offer on Beryl Bikes.

If you’re looking for the best cycle route, you can use an online cycle map, which has details of city cycle routes, Beryl bike hubs, local amenities and attractions and places of interest.

“We know hundreds of people across Brighton & Hove already cycle regularly to and from their office or workplace. If you haven’t been on your bike for a while, summer is an ideal time to get back in the saddle.

“Cycling has so many physical and mental health benefits, but it’s also great for reducing the city’s harmful emissions and improving air quality.”

Great for mind and body

Cycling offers a wide range of health benefits that support both physical and mental wellbeing.

  • It improves cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles and helps with weight management, while being gentle on the joints.
  • Regular cycling can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.
  • Mentally, it boosts mood, reduces stress and anxiety, and enhances sleep and cognitive function. As a low-impact, accessible form of exercise, cycling can be easily integrated into daily routines – such as commuting – which  makes it a sustainable way to stay active and healthy throughout your life.
