With just over two weeks to go until David Attenborough’s Belated Birthday Party we thought we’d tell you all about it. The kids-party-for-adults-cum-exhibition being held at The Egg & Spoon will be a celebration of all things art and Dave. He is the man who opened our hearts and minds to the natural world with a tone so soothing he could calm even the most grizzly of bears. So why not hold a belated birthday party for him?

The brand-new Brighton-based art collective ‘Look Mom I’m An Artist’ will be hosting the event in collaboration with the cafe in which it is being held. They have said “Attenborough is a national treasure that we as a collective cherish dearly so half of all door money collected will be donated to World Land Trust, the charity Dave is the patron of.” – not only do you get a fun night out you can also help to save some animals in the process!

Georgia from the collective said “we chose to do the exhibition as a belated birthday party as it made the whole thing a little bit funnier and more accessible. The idea of an exhibition having to be in a gallery or white space seems really dated, particularly in a place like Brighton, so we thought we’d add some fun into it. We’re not claiming to be the first to try and buck the ‘white cube’ ideology but we’ve never seen an exhibition disguised as a birthday party before so hopefully people will be intrigued!”

As the evening unfolds, a whole host of party games will ensue. From ‘Pin the Monkey on David Attenborough’s Shoulder’ to ‘Make Your Own Party Hat’ there will be loads to do as the drinks start to flow. You cannot bring your own booze into the venue but there will be discounted beers and gins in tins available to purchase. As the event organisers say themselves “if you are found with your own booze you’ll ruin the vibez for everyone so don’t be a party pooper.”

The exhibition is aiming to showcase and sell some of the best up-and-coming Brighton artists and their work. The artists who have been announced so far are SKUMCLUB, the seriously talented illustrator and tattoo artist who did a great interview with us earlier this year; ILLWOOKIE, a local well-established illustrator and designer who specialises in graphic prints; Charlie Brown, a brilliant local illustrator who’ll be showing off some loveable but somewhat wonky giraffes; Oli Carter Hopkins, the co-curator of Resist-Reclaim-Liberate and one of the best young artists in Brighton right now and finally…Ben Hills, a key player in Brighton’s hardcore punk scene, they have been taking incredible photographs at shows over the last couple of years. We have been assured that more artists will be added in the coming weeks, details are just being finalised!

It will be two pounds on the door but attendees are welcome to give more if they can afford it or are feeling generous.  David Attenborough’s Belated Birthday Party will run for one night only from 6:30-10:00 pm on the 14th June at the Egg & Spoon cafe in Kemp Town village. Maybe David will make an appearance…
