The Bevendean Community is like no other in Brighton and Hove, the camaraderie is unparalleled. There are so many community groups in operation it was hard to chose which to talk about here. Below are just some things and places you might like to discover…

The Bevy –
This pub is the first community-owned estate in the UK. It opened in 2014 and is funded by over 700 shareholders. They often hold community events like Brains at the Bevy and community bake off’s. If you’d like to talk to someone about becoming a shareholder call 01273 281009 or email [email protected]

The garden group formed in 2010 have developed a beautiful green space for the community in Bevendean. The site includes a clay oven, commuity compost scheme, fruit and vegetable growing and a wildlife area. Updates on what’s going on is found on the Facebook page here.

Bevendean Community Facebook Page
This page was created so community members can find out and tell people about things going on in the community. Things you will hear about include stuff like BevFest. This is a festival that includes local bands, great food, and activities for everyone to enjoy.

This group was formed to improve Farm Green Park. They are hoping to make it a more attractive and accessible place for all community members, from toddlers to seniors.

This centre provides nursery provision for children younger than school age. As well as after school clubs for kids under 16.

This group has been running since 2013, they present at local events and teach about the local history of Bevendean. They used their funding recently to provide primary school children with historic crafts and archaeology.

Holy Nativity Community Centre and Building Group
This group is made up of 12 members, six of which are local residents and the others are part of the Parochial Parish Council. They manage the Holy Nativity Community Centre as a community asset and then use the venue as a place which the community can hire.

The page ‘My Brighton and Hove’ tells of many places in and around Brighton and tells you what the places mean to the sites creators. Here they describe Simmonds Dew Pond, ‘East Brighton contains some stunning downlands and one particular treasure is the lovely Simmonds Pond. Sat between Bevendean and Moulescoomb valleys, this man-made dew pond is a delight.’

If you visit the page you will also find out about Jacob’s Ladder, you can read accounts of local residents. Here is one; ‘It would appear that ‘your’ Jacobs Ladder are the steps from the Hyde Industrial Estate to Wilson Ave. When I lived in Hornby Road between 1950 and 1977, Jacobs Ladder was the steps from the Avenue up to the old Bevendean Hospital.’
