Last year Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana hit headlines for all the wrong reasons. The high end fashion designing duo made inflammatory remarks about gay families whilst being interviewed by Italian magazine, Panorama. “We oppose gay adoptions; the only family is the traditional one” Dolce said in the interview. They went on to describe children born through IVF as “children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalogue”. Naturally, the remarks outraged many, particularly Elton John who called for a boycott of the brand, the boycott in question drew support from the likes of Victoria Beckham, Courtney Love, Al Rocker and Martina Navratilova.
However, since then, the pair have apologised for their remarks, with Dolce saying “I’ve done some soul searching. I’ve talked to Stefano a lot about this…they are just kids” in an interview with Vogue. It is thought that Elton John has forgiven them, and naturally the boycott of their brand is over. Though it seems that Dolce and Gabbana are still keen to prove that they have definitely changed their views with their new family range. The range, to be launched soon, contains bags and t shirts featuring different types of families including children with two mothers and two fathers. The fashion house already sell a t shirt of the designers with their five pets drawn in a similar style to those on the new range. There is no word yet on the price or the release date, though rumours have circulated that the announcement of the line was timed to fit in with the Italian vote on whether the government would recognise same-sex civil unions and in some cases extend parental rights to couples in a same-sex union. The reaction to the line was mixed, as is expected, with some Instagram users suggesting the label was trying to make up for lost sales from gay customers. Whilst that might be the case, the range looks lovely and is a great way of not only apologising for the terrible things they said last year, but celebrating diversity at the same time.
