Encouraging more women to cycle – free taster sessions in Brighton

There’s an opportunity for women in Brighton & Hove to take part in a free e-bike taster session next month.

With the support of Beryl, the city’s bike hire operator, and the Brighton Bike Hub, we’re running two rides for women, led by women, at Hove Park.

We want to find out what would encourage women to cycle more, hear about their experiences of cycling and get feedback on some of the barriers they face.

The two-hour sessions both take place on Friday 4 July during school hours, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. They start and end outside Hove Park Café and include a free tea or coffee, when we’ll ask participants to take part in a short survey/focus group.

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said: “These taster sessions really are a good opportunity for women to try out an e-bike, but also give us valuable insight into what may be preventing them from using the hire e-bikes to cycle around the city.

“We know that fewer women tend to hire bikes compared to men. While the gap between them is smaller in Brighton & Hove, this is still a good chance to explore and listen to the reasons why.

“Cycling is great for the mind and body and a sustainable way of getting around. If we can learn more about the reasons why some people are prevented from getting on a bike, then we can work to remove these barriers.”

Course bookings close at 5pm on Thursday 3 July
