It’s not even November yet, and already everyone’s favourite virus is doing the rounds around the city. Yes it’s our old friend the common cold. Oh how we’ve missed you. Colds are more common in winter, and while it’s true that there really is no absolute cure for the virus, we’ve put together a list of home remedies that might help to ease your suffering just a little bit.

Ginger

The health benefits of ginger have been proclaimed by herbalists for centuries. Ginger contains the bio-active compound Gingerol, which is responsible for much of its medicinal properties. It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. A few thin slices of root ginger in a mug of boiling water with a slice of lemon could help to soothe a cough or a sore throat. If you’re struggling in the morning, a ginger shot might give you the boost you need. You can buy them in most supermarkets.

Salt water

Gargling with salt water may help to ease sore throat pain and nasal congestion, because it loosens mucus which contains bacteria and allergens. To try this remedy at home, dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Swish it around your mouth and throat and then spit it out. Repeat this several times a day, and you might notice you feel a little less bunged up.

Garlic

Garlic contains compounds that help the immune system fight germs. The main active ingredient in garlic is called Allicin, but its benefits can be deactivated by heat. However, research has shown that crushing the garlic and letting it stand for ten minutes before cooking can help prevent the loss of its medicinal properties. If you don’t fancy the effect on your breath that putting nine cloves of garlic in your pasta sauce could have, try taking a garlic supplement tablet once a day.

Manuka Honey

Notoriously expensive, Manuka honey has become extremely popular thanks to its antibacterial and antiviral properties. These properties can help to reduce inflammation and fight the bacteria that cause a sore throat. Try mixing a spoonful of it in a cup of herbal tea, or, if you’re really serious about getting better, just have a spoonful straight out of the jar. Investing in a some of this special honey could prove really worthwhile. Since it has become so popular, it can now be found in cheaper supermarkets for a much more affordable price.

If all else fails, run a warm bath and let the steam clear your airways. Adding Epsom salts might help to ease body aches, and a couple of drops of an essential oil like Lavender or Rosemary might help to relax tension in your head and muscles.
