Renowned for being an expensive sport, riddled with upper-class people that boast wealthy bank balances, golf can often feel out of reach to the rest of us.
A set of golf clubs is a pricey canvas to build upon, with other accessories such as balls, bags and branded sportswear adding to the costly platform needed to stand tall within this Gentleman’s game.
Here at Bjournal, we may not be able to help you with the start-up costs but once you’ve got yourself up and running, here are five affordable courses where you can sharpen your tools and enjoy a quality round of golf alongside stunning surroundings:
Hollingbury Park Golf Club – £14

Hassocks Golf Club – £10

Situated just north of Brighton, Hassocks Golf Club is a reasonably flat course with a number of water hazards, meaning shot accuracy is imperative throughout. Sitting amongst the countryside’s finest landscapes, the Par 70 course has carpet-like greens and the Par 5 11th can be considered one of the toughest in the county. At only £10 for a midweek round, Hassocks Golf Club is a fantastic choice to feed your golfing addiction and great value for money.
Lindfield Golf Club – £11

This West Sussex course is surrounded by picturesque views of the countryside, with deep rough and an array of bunkers making Lindfield a brutal course to accomplish on the clearest of days. The Par 70 downland course is well maintained by passionate greenkeepers all year-round, providing a challenging test for the more accomplished golfer, yet still enjoyable for those still learning the game. Enjoy an 18-hole round at Lindfield for only £11, which equates to less than 65p a hole, a price the tightest of golfers cannot argue with.
Mannings Heath Golf Club – £12.15

On arrival, you will notice the eye-catching 17th century clubhouse that instantly earns respect and appreciation from visiting golfers. There are two 18-hole courses on site, with one limited to club members and the Kingfisher course open to all. The pristine course set within an area of outstanding natural beauty, delivers a collection of problematic holes that make you work hard for low scores on the Par 70 bunker-infested course. Playing fairly open off the tee, the course can be forgiving to an extent, however silky greens can be the difference between a positive score and a complete nightmare. At just £12.15, a midweek round at Mannings Heath is outstanding value for money considering the quality of the breathtaking surroundings and the immaculate conditions.
Cottesmore Golf and Country Club – Griffin £20 – Phoenix £14

This last course is an absolute beauty. Well in fact, both of them are. That’s right; you have two stunning courses to choose from. Cottesmore Golf and Country Club is located just outside of Crawley and very easy to find from the M23. Cleverly tucked into the beautiful Sussex countryside, Cottesmore oozes elegance and class, with its attractive appearance drawing players from further afield. The Griffin course is spectacular and ever so testing to take on. At just £20 for a round on the ‘father’ course, it is easily worth every penny. If you’re looking for something a little less challenging but equally as perfect in its appearance, the Phoenix course is a great deal at only £14.
