Intersections at KMA Gallery Brighton opens this month — and it is one of the most quietly compelling exhibitions coming to the city this summer.
Running from 27 June to 17 August 2026 at KMA Gallery on Church Street, the exhibition brings
together two artists whose own paths crossed years ago as student and tutor — and who now return to the same space with work that speaks to landscape, memory and the forces that draw us together.

About the Exhibition
Curator Kellie Miller has built Intersections around a simple but powerful premise: that the landscape bears the traces of every journey ever made across it — and that where those journeys meet, something worth examining is left behind.
The two artists she has brought together share an instinct for abstraction and a deep connection to specific places. Their methods are entirely different. The conversation between them is the exhibition.
Kate Wickham — Paintings
Sussex-based Kate Wickham approaches painting in a gestural, exploratory way — finding the spaces between land and architecture, abstracting the topographical through map-like and aerial perspectives.
Her work is multi-dimensional: intricate in its detail, expansive in its colour, and always rooted in a felt sense of place rather than a literal one. Cornwall and France are recurring sources of inspiration alongside her home county of Sussex.
For Intersections, Kellie has invited Wickham to work at a larger scale than she has previously — and the results are striking. Inlet and A Writer’s Garden, both mixed media on board, demonstrate a painter fully in command of a new register.
Craig Underhill — Ceramics
Scottish ceramicist Craig Underhill has built a significant international following through his YouTube and Instagram channels — not through polished presentation, but through the raw honesty of his process.
His slab-built vessels are grounded in the Cornish landscapes he walks regularly. Based on sketches and drawings made on location, the works evoke atmosphere rather than record appearances — capturing the mood of a place through mark-making and the use of natural materials including sand as surface finish.
The result is ceramic work that functions more like three-dimensional painting than traditional pottery. For Intersections, Underhill is also working at his largest scale to date.
About KMA Gallery Brighton
KMA Gallery is one of Brighton’s longest-standing independent galleries, occupying a space in the historic cultural quarter on Church Street since 2013. Founded and curated by Kellie Miller — an international artist, curator and critic with an MA in Arts Criticism from City University, London — the gallery specialises in sculpture, textured painting, mixed media and ceramics.
It is a gallery that prizes the hand of the artist — and it shows.
