Local Squash Player Jasmine Hutton (whose Dad Ben Hutton runs local club Hove Fitness and Squash ) won her sixth professional Competition by Winning the Irish Open – her biggest yet. The 24 year old scooped the 20k event and seeded number one, she came through in flying colours to win against the unseeded young Malaysian Aira Azman.
At an impressive pace and with remarkable precision, Azman triumphed in the first game, winning 11-8 . However, Jasmine gradually gained momentum and took control of the game, winning the second game 11-5 and the third 11-4.
Undeterred, Azman made a determined effort to turn things around in the fourth game. Nevertheless, Jasmine’s exceptional ball-hitting skills and powerful drive ultimately proved too formidable for Azman to overcome. In the end, Hutton emerged as the winner with a score of 3-1 after 39 minutes of play.
We caught her up with briefly following her winning the final.
‘It is always special winning a title but this one means alot as its my biggest title in my career so far. I have made some changes in my career recently and it is a special one in the fact that I also haven’t had a great season so far . This was a really strong draw and my opponent was a big surprise in reaching the finals as she was unseeded and so I’m just very pleased I came through today”.
Talking of her position in the rankings and upcoming European teams event she added “I’m hoping to get a better ranking and hopefully will move up with the points from this season. Just happy to have gotten through this one successfully so I can concentrate on playing and winning the European teams title which will be in Helsinki this upcoming week. We have tough opponents with Belgium being second seeds but hoping we can overcome that and then I have the World Open which will be in Chicago”.
A young exciting prospect and one of England’s big hopes for the future , it is definitely a case of “watch this space’ for the up and coming Brightonian.
