Some time after midnight last night, a loud bang was heard over central Brighton, alerting residents and alarming birds… But what was it?

The loud explosion was heard by many and talked about on Twitter, but where did it originate? Locals past Elm Grove and even Preston Park heard it…

Many thought it may have been someone letting off fireworks, but soon realised it was too loud for that.

A spokesperson for Sussex police said, “At around 20 minutes past midnight on Monday (26 June) police received a report of a loud bang in the Preston Road area of Brighton” and that “There were no reports of injury or damage to property.”

Speculation is abundant but at present nothing has been confirmed.

  1. Didn’t hear a loud bang but what sounded like scaffolding being dismantled for about half an hour at 1.30 am in the Varndean School region – very loud – not sure if a building site was being burgled!
