A brand-new marathon is coming to Brighton next year, promising to bring trail running from the countryside to the city streets in what organisers are calling a “unique event unlike anything the UK has seen before.”
The Brighton Trail Marathon, launching in 2026, will combine 36 kilometres of scenic South Downs trails with the final six kilometres of the Brighton Marathon route, finishing along the iconic Hove Lawns.
Up to 1,500 runners are expected to take part, setting off from Stanmer Park and following chalk ridgelines and valleys before joining the city seafront for a lively, crowd-filled finish.
Ben MacWilliam, co-founder and CEO of Maverick Race, the company behind the event, said the aim was to create something fresh and exciting for the growing trail-running community.
“Trail running is more popular than ever, but at Maverick we’re always looking for new ways to innovate,” he said. “The Brighton Trail Marathon is unlike anything the UK has seen before. By combining the joy of running off-road across the stunning South Downs with the electric atmosphere of the Brighton Marathon finish, we’re creating a totally unique experience for British runners.”
Runners will be cheered on by crowds and live entertainment as they complete the final stretch alongside participants in the main Brighton Marathon.
The event will take place on Sunday, April 12, 2026, forming part of the wider Brighton Marathon Weekend, one of the city’s biggest sporting celebrations.
The day before, Maverick Race will host the Maverick East Sussex Trail event, offering a half marathon, 13km, and 5km run, all set entirely on the South Downs.
The Brighton Marathon, organised by London Marathon Events, also takes place that weekend, along with the Brighton and Hove 10K and the free Brighton Miles in Preston Park on Saturday, April 11.
General entry for the Brighton Marathon has already sold out, but charity places remain available. Entries for the Brighton and Hove 10K, Brighton Miles, and the new Brighton Trail Marathon are still open.
Entry for the Trail Marathon costs £79, and running brand Brooks has been announced as the official shoe and apparel partner for both the Brighton Trail Marathon and the wider marathon weekend.
Organisers say the event will combine the natural beauty of the South Downs with the buzz of a big-city finish, offering runners a new challenge and a celebratory ending on Brighton’s famous seafront.
