Theatre Royal Brighton, in collaboration with Sketchup Brighton and local artist Mhari Smith, is delighted to present BIRDS! — a series of free, drop-in paper bird workshops culminating in a captivating living installation beneath the theatre’s historic colonnade.

Sponsored by Bird and Blend Tea Co., the workshops will run over three Saturdays during Brighton Festival and Fringe, beginning Saturday 10 May, and are open to all ages and abilities. No booking is required, and all materials are provided — just turn up and get creative.

Organised by Theatre Royal Brighton’s Creative Learning programme, Birds! invites the community to handcraft two beautiful paper birds: one to take home and one to join a growing murmuration displayed at the theatre. Led by Mhari Smith — founder of Sketchup Brighton, an art club for children and young people —this vibrant, collective artwork celebrates the diversity and spirit of Brighton during its most creative month.

“We’re aiming to create at least 218 birds to mark the Theatre’s 218th birthday on 6 June,” said Jackie Alexander, Senior Creative Learning Manager at Theatre Royal Brighton. “Birds! is the perfect way for people of all ages to celebrate the Festival and Fringe and create their own little piece of magic.”

Join us, bring a friend, and help our flock take flight!
