Brighton and Hove Police have released CCTV footage of a man suspected of punching a supermarket manger, leading to hospital treatment, after being accused of shoplifting.

According to police, the incident, which occurred at Sainsbury’s on North Street on 4th July, saw the manager of the store confront the suspect who he believed had been shoplifting, and search him. The suspect then began to get aggressive and punched the victim in the face several times, which resulted in hospital treatment, before fleeing the scene.

During the incident, the suspect dropped a mobile phone, but police later found that it was not set up and did not contain a sim-card, unfortunately making it useless in their investigation.

The CCTV footage shows the suspect fleeing the scene, with the manager whom he assaulted lying in the background.

The suspect has been described as being a black male, around 5 foot 10, and wearing a light grey full tracksuit, with black trainers, and carrying a large black backpack. It is still unclear as to wether or not the suspect initially stole anything

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed this assault, or recognises the suspect shown in the CCTV footage to come forward to assist their investigation.

To respond to the appeal, you can report online or call 101 quoting serial 212 of 04/07. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers online, or by calling 0800 555 111.
