Sea Life Brighton – 8th March 2026
5 stars
Sea Life Brighton is the oldest continually operating aquarium in the world, having opened its doors way back in 1872. The grand Victorian arches and intricate tiled halls are home to glowing tanks brimming with sharks, giant sea turtles, rays, jellyfish and hundreds of colourful fish. One moment, you are marvelling at the beautiful architecture, the next you are under the ocean walkway, watching a turtle glide gracefully overhead.
It is not the biggest aquarium you will ever explore, but it packs plenty of excitement and surprises into every corner. Alongside the fun, there is just enough learning sprinkled throughout to leave you thinking about the oceans long after you leave.
The highlight for many visitors is the Ocean Display with its famous glass tunnel. This vast tank holds hundreds of marine creatures and lets you walk beneath them as they swim above. Giant green sea turtles drift serenely while sharks and rays pass gracefully through the water around them.Â
The sheer scale of the tank is impressive, containing hundreds of thousands of litres of water and hosting a dazzling mix of sharks, tropical fish and rays. Blacktip reef sharks weave through shoals of colourful fish, while stingrays glide along the sandy floor, creating the immersive experience aquariums strive for.
For some excitement, the glass bottom boat offers a fresh perspective. Instead of looking up at the creatures, you float above them on a small boat with a transparent floor. Watching sharks, rays and turtles swim directly beneath your feet is a slightly surreal but brilliant experience, made even better by informative commentary from the aquarium team. The ride comes at an extra cost, but it is a memorable way to see the main tank from a completely different angle.
Elsewhere, there are plenty of smaller but equally fun attractions and the whole place encourages a relaxed pace, with spaces to pause and watch the marine life at your leisure. The aquarium hosts thousands of creatures from tiny reef dwellers to large predators. Sharks glide calmly through the water, while giant green sea turtles steal the show. Colourful reef fish dart between coral displays, curious octopuses peek from rocky corners, and seahorses cling determinedly to plants. The variety keeps each area feeling fresh and engaging.
Themed zones make the visit feel like a journey through different aquatic worlds. From the Ocean Display to Rainforest Adventure, and the coastal and rock pool areas, there is something new to explore at every turn.
Sea Life Brighton perfectly blends history and modern marine displays. The Victorian building gives the aquarium its charm, while glowing tanks and interactive exhibits bring it to life. Passionate staff really enhance the experience through talks and feeding demonstrations, and the aquarium’s commitment to conservation and education is evident throughout.Â
Sea Life Brighton may not be the largest aquarium, but it is packed with character. Between the ocean tunnel, glass bottom boat and so many gorgeous sea creatures, there is plenty to see and enjoy. It is a relaxed, fascinating day out by the seafront, and it is easy to see why this Brighton attraction has been loved for over 150 years.
