Safer, Better Streets improvements getting underway

Starting at the end of this month, Brighton & Hove City Council be making junction improvements as part of our Safer, Better Streets programme.

They’ve been chosen based on requests the council receives from residents and assessing information such as casualty data, traffic information and areas that need walking and cycling improvements.

Following public consultations, work is scheduled for:

• Nevill Avenue at the junction of Holmes Avenue
• Newtown Road at the junction of Fonthill Road
• The junction of Goldstone Villas, Eaton Villas and Clarendon Villas

Nevill Avenue / Holmes Avenue

• Improved pedestrian crossings and dropped kerbs for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and buggies
• A new zebra crossing for pedestrian safety and encourage drivers to slow down.
• Resurfacing to improve both safety and comfort for all road users.

Work is scheduled to begin on Sunday 31 August and last approximately four weeks.

Newtown Road / Fonthill Road

• Closing the west arm of the junction to motor vehicles, to prevent rat running
• Tackling speeding in residential areas
• Planting two new trees
• Installing new cycle stands
• Improving the tactile paving for pedestrians

Work is scheduled to begin start of October and last approximately five weeks.

Goldstone Villas, Eaton Villas and Clarendon Villas

• Removing the mini roundabout
• Raising the junction on the approach to encourage vehicles to slow down
• Making the junction of Eaton Villas and Goldstone Villas one way for motor vehicles
• Installing give-way lines on Clarendon Villas at the junction with Goldstone Villas
• Widening the pavements on Eaton Villas and Clarendon Villas at the junctions to create more space for pedestrians
• Improving the pedestrian crossing on Eaton Villas
• Adding a new crossing point across Goldstone Villas
• Upgrading the current crossing on Clarendon Villas to a zebra crossing

Work is scheduled to begin start of November and last approximately six weeks.

Junction of Dyke Road and Upper North Street

In addition to the Safer, Better Streets schemes above, the council will also be improving the junction of Dyke Road and Upper North Street.

• Removing the traffic lights and replace them with a new ‘T’ junction.
• Installing a zebra crossing on Upper North Street
• Installing a Vehicle Activated Sign to encourage motor vehicles to slow down.

Work is scheduled to begin in September and last approximately 8 weeks.

Making our streets safer

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure said: “It’s great to see these projects getting underway, starting with Nevill Avenue. Safer, Better Streets ensures we can prioritise those areas of the city most in need of improvement.

“We’ve also listened carefully to the feedback we received from residents and local businesses during the consultation phase  and have made changes to improve where needed.

“Improving our roads and making them safer for everyone is a priority for us. We’re spending more than £8 million this year on resurfacing, repairing and infrastructure improvements across Brighton & Hove.”
