Brighton and Hove Albion made their first summer signing yesterday and are welcoming Leon Balogun to the team, who can hopefully assist in maintaining the success that the Seagulls experienced last season.
The Nigerian defender has made the move to Chris Hughton’s side on a free transfer, and has signed for two years with the club.
This signing takes Balogun from his previous team, Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05, where he had been since 2015. Before this he had been signed to Hannover and Werder Bremen, with his career having begun in 2007 at Turkiyemspor Berlin.
Balogun, who is German born, is eligible for a place in the Nigerian team due to his father, and earlier this month was named in the country’s preliminary squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, after missing out in 2014 due to a broken foot.
According to Brighton and Hove Albion website, manager Chris Hughton has said that he is “delighted to welcome Leon to the club […] He is in the peak years of his career and I am sure he will integrate well into the squad.” Hughton went on to add that he is “pleased to get our first piece of business done so early in the summer.”
This early signing indicates that Hughton, who last week signed a new three year contract with the club, intends on being very active in the transfer window. He will presumably be looking to add depth to the Seagulls already strong defensive set up, which had one of the best defensive records in the bottom half of the table this season.
Congratulations Leon, and welcome to the Seagulls!
