Brighton is no stranger to the performing arts and, as if to prove this point, they play host to an eclectic mix of festivals. The brand new Starboard Festival will continue this trend, this time with the purpose of displaying youth theatre to the public.

Made by, with and for young performers, Starboard Festival takes place in the Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) and features a vast line-up of stars between the ages of 0 and 21. Running across 16 days and with 20 shows to choose from, there will be something for everyone at the BOAT.

The starring shows feature a performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, courtesy of the Windmill Young Actors, Poets vs. MCs presented by the Old Market and an original show called Superhero, brought to you by the students of Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

The festival, partnered with some of Brighton’s biggest and best-known institutions, will be a chance for local youth to showcase its talent on stage.

Much more than that, however, is the fact that the festival will also play host to workshops with some of the UK’s best theatre makers. The likes of Fin Kennedy, Evie Manning and Toby Park will be present to impart their wisdom to youngsters who are inspired by what’s in store at Starboard Festival.

Given that this is the festival’s first year, it could well be the start of something special. Will we be seeing the newest acting stars making their names at Starboard Festival? Come along to the BOAT between the 2nd and the 17th July to find out!
