New Sussex Opera: The Dragon of Wantley

Sunday 21 April, 16:00

Tickets from £29

Live opera, fully staged. A dragon is terrorizing the Yorkshire countryside, devouring anything it meets. The only person who can save the locals is a drunken squire – if he can put down his pint. He agrees, but just as daunting as his monstrous opponent is the love triangle that ensues. Will the dragon prevail? And who will get their man?

The Dragon of Wantley, the 1737 smash hit of the London season, parodies Handel’s serious operas – as well as poking fun at the government of the day. The combination of Lampe’s first-rate music (of which Handel himself approved) and wonderfully witty libretto by Henry Carey makes this opera a comic gem.

Don’t miss the rare chance to see this masterpiece of English comic opera performed with a traditional period orchestra as New Sussex Opera sets the opera in a South Yorkshire of the 1980’s (against the background of the miners’ strike). The recent recording of The Dragon of Wantley from the Brook Street Band and conductor John Andrews won BBC Music Magazine 2023 Award in Opera.

Conductor Toby Purser and director Paul Higgins join forces again following their success with Stanford’s The Travelling Companion for New Sussex Opera, which was nominated for an International Opera Award, with what was a world première recording released on the SOMM label.

New Sussex Opera Chorus, The Bellot Baroque Ensemble, conductor Toby Purser, director Paul Higgins, designer Mollie Cheek. Cast includes Magnus Walker, Ana Beard Fernández, Charlotte Badham and Robert Gildon.

Community-based New Sussex Opera has been presenting innovative productions with high musical standards since 1978 – specialising in lesser-known or neglected works, including a number of UK premieres.

“We were engaged and dazzled, seduced and amused” – Planet Hugill (on NSO’s Belle Lurette 2022)

“New Sussex Opera constantly surprises with its ambition and the quality of its staged productions” – Opera Now 2021

“From the first bar this production had it in the bag” – Jacques Offenbach Society Review 2020

“NSO tackles territory none of the big guns would have dared approach” –  Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph

TOM’s Film Club: Grey Gardens (12A)

Monday 29 April, 20:00

Tickets £7.50

Join us for one of the oddest and most beautiful films ever made!

Meet Big and Little Edie Beale: mother and daughter, high-society dropouts, and reclusive cousins of Jackie Onassis. The two manage to thrive together amid the decay and disorder of their East Hampton, New York, mansion, making for an eerily ramshackle echo of the American Camelot.

An impossibly intimate portrait, this 1976 documentary by Albert and David Maysles, co-directed by Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer, quickly became a cult classic and established Little Edie as a fashion icon and philosopher queen.

Fancy dress is not compulsory, but if you do, there might be a drink in it for you, and we’ll also aim to get you a seat in the bar complete with cats, racoons and American flags.

“The more they squabble, the more one is reminded of Bette and Joan in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? And the resemblance they bear to Divine and Edith “the Egg Lady” Massey in Pink Flamingos, released two years earlier, is so eerie one is almost prepared to credit John Waters with ESP” – John Patterson, The Guardian

TOM’s Film Club: Tampopo (15)

Tuesday 30 April, 20:00

Tickets £7.50

The tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe, this rapturous ‘ramen western’ by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the way social conventions distort the most natural of human urges – our appetites.

Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture both high and low, the sweet, sexy, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever made.

“Tampopo is one of those utterly original movies that seems to exist in no known category. Like the French comedies of Jacques Tati, it’s a bemused meditation on human nature in which one humorous situation flows into another offhandedly, as if life were a series of smiles” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Susie Dent presents The Secret Lives of Words

Sunday 5 May, 14:00

Tickets £25

Join Susie Dent; lexicographer, best-selling author, and Queen of Dictionary Corner, and take a journey into the curious, unexpected, and downright surreal origins of the words we use every day.

Susie will retell the adventures that lie hidden within such words as lasagne (involving a chamber pot) and bugbear (a terrorising monster), and explain such oddities as the silent h in ghost and the mysterious disappearance of kempt, gormful, and ruly (and yes, you really can be gruntled). She will look to the lexicon of the past to fill some of today’s linguistic gaps – such as the frenzied fit of tidying we all do just as guests are about to descend (that’s a scurryfunge).

Alongside such forgotten stories you will hear Susie’s selection of the funniest moments from her 25 years on Countdown and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, as well as some startling results from eavesdropping on a group of waiters.

The evening will include some of Susie’s favourite words from the towns and regions she visits, and she’ll be asking the audience for theirs. In fact, she’ll be welcoming any questions about word origins, usage irritations, the dreaded impact of Americanisation, and the very future of our language in her very own ‘word surgery’.

“Wonderfully clever and funny… a national treasury from a national treasure” – Richard Osman

Alfie Moore: A Face For Radio

Saturday 8 June, 19:30

Tickets £21

Somewhere in a parallel universe, little Alfie’s natural comedic performance skills were recognised by his doting parents who encouraged and developed his blossoming talent. After several years as a stage school brat, Alfie’s angelic face was launched on stage and screen and the rest is history.

Meanwhile, in this universe, Alfie Moore was told to stop messing about in class before being ‘encouraged’ into the grinding, grimy world of an apprenticeship in the Sheffield steelworks. When the recession hit, he traded steel for copper by joining Humberside Police.

Thirty years of shift work, initially in the Sheffield steelworks and then as a copper on the beat (where he was punched in the face quite a lot), has left him with A Face For Radio. A face not so much ‘lived in’ as inhabited by a settlement of squatters with little regard to property maintenance and repair.

In his 40s, a surprising career shift turned middle-aged Alfie from street cop to BBC radio star. But when TV fame beckoned, could he grasp it or was he past it?

Norman Cook, the man who has performed to over five million people live at the Salvador Carnival in Bahia, filled Brighton beach with 250 thousand ravers in one of the most historic outdoor events in UK history, and the only artist to have performed at Glastonbury consecutively for 26 years running, is inviting audience members to get up close and personal with him for an intimate discussion in his home town of Hove, right here at The Old Market this October.

This event is a continuation of Norman’s previous storytelling session, held in a similar format at TOM in November last year. Due to the overwhelming demand for more, he is returning for a second round this year.

Hosted by charismatic Brighton-based presenter Guy Lloyd and featuring all new questions and topics, Norman will be sharing nostalgic stories from his iconic career for one night only as the pair discuss some of the breathtaking moments that raised the profile of Fatboy Slim to household name status worldwide.

It all began for Norman at the age of 14 when his brother passed down to him a copy of the first album by The Damned, the punk influence was clear across the various bands he played in as a teenager, and at 18 he rapidly developed his DJ-ing skills in Brighton’s thriving club scene. Shortly after, Norman found himself performing as an integral part of The Housemartins, reaching the Top 10 in the UK albums charts and hitting number one in 1986 with the band’s rendition of Caravan Of Love. In 1996 the era of Fatboy Slim emerged and the rest, as they say, is history.

Of the upcoming event, Norman says, “Having played a few energetic sets at The Old Market before, I’m really excited to return to one of my favourite venues for something a little different this time. It’ll be nice to get up close and personal with the audience once again in an intimate setting; a fun opportunity to share some of my stories from what’s been a rollercoaster career; there’s a lot to unpack so strap yourselves in!”

Nick Heyward

Thursday 31 October, 19:30

Tickets £30

Following a huge 2023 with Haircut 100 playing the BBC Radio 2 Piano Room, a sell-out London reunion show at the O2 Shepherds Bush Empire and a joyous tour of the UK and Ireland; Nick Heyward sets off on his first solo tour since the critically acclaimed Woodland Echoes album release tour in 2018. Join Nick and his four-piece band for songs from across his entire 40+ year career with a preview of new material.

Creatively ambitious from the start, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter began his career as the songwriter and frontman of Haircut 100. Marrying Chic with The Monkees, they rode the post-new-romantic-funk wave of the early 1980s burning brightly, but briefly. Following four UK top 10 singles, Fantastic Day, Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl), Love Plus One and Nobody’s Fool, and their debut album, Pelican West, going platinum, the band parted ways.

North of a Miracle, Heyward’s first solo album saw him working with The Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick to craft pop landscapes incorporating full orchestra, a jazz band and catchy pop-funk all knitted together with top-flight songwriting that was featured in John Hughes’ classic film, Sixteen Candles.

Continuing to record through the 80s, Heyward found his stride again with 1993’s From Monday to Sunday. Lead single Kite took off in America’s burgeoning alternative scene, reached #4 in the Billboard Alternative Chart, and found Heyward touring the country with the likes of The Lemonheads and Tony Bennett. The follow-up album, Tangled, was more pure power pop and lead to Heyward signing to Creation Records for his final album of the 90s, The Apple Bed.

Critic’s favourite, Woodland Echoes (2017), Heyward’s most recent release saw him return to touring with shows in the UK, USA and Japan.
