Brighton & Hove City Council is accepting nominations for the Freedom of the City and is reminding residents they still have time to put someone forward for what is one of the highest civic honours the council can bestow.
The award recognises exceptional service or achievement that has made a significant impact on the city and its people.
Previous recipients of the honour include trailblazing suffragette Mary Clarke and Brighton & Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom and former Albion manager Chris Hughton, who were both recognised following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
More recently, Emily Kenward, who launched Time to Talk Befriending, a charity which has supported more than 3,500 people, and Mesfin Abraham Ghebre-Ghiorghis, who spent 37 years working as a council officer and was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to race equality and local democracy, were both bestowed with the award.
The council is keen for residents to share who they think should be considered.
Nominations are now open and must be submitted by Sunday 19 July 2026.
Councillor Bella Sankey, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “We want to hear from residents about the people who inspire them and the unsung heroes who make a real difference.”
Nominations will be reviewed by a cross-party group of councillors, with recommendations then made to a special council meeting scheduled for November 2026, where the final decision will be taken.
