Sally Becker, a British humanitarian based in Brighton, is a finalist for the prestigious Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, which will be announced this evening in NYC. Internationally known for her frontline work evacuating children and families from war zones, has been named a finalist for the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. The winner will be announced this evening in New York City.
Ms. Becker, who is based in Brighton, has spent more than thirty years providing lifesaving medical evacuations, humanitarian aid and safe passage to children caught in the crossfire of some of the world’s most devastating conflicts. Her work has taken her to Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Ukraine and, most recently, Gaza, where she has led operations to move critically injured children to hospitals able to provide urgent care.
Often referred to as “The Angel of Mostar” for her courageous humanitarian missions during the Bosnian War, Becker has consistently worked in situations where access is limited and risk is high. Without regard for her personal safety, she has negotiated with military commanders, crossed frontline territories, and personally escorted children to safety.
“My work has always been about giving children a chance to live — regardless of who they are or where they come from,” said Becker.
“In every conflict, it is children who suffer the most. If this recognition helps shine a light on their suffering and the urgent need for humanitarian access, then it means something truly important.”
The Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity is one of the world’s most respected humanitarian awards, recognising individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage and commitment to saving lives. Ms. Becker was selected as one of four finalists from a field of more than 800 nominations submitted from around the world.
Through her organisation Save A Child, Becker continues to coordinate medical evacuations and humanitarian logistics for children who have lost access to vital treatment due to conflict. Her current operations include coordinating safe corridors for children requiring surgery and cancer care from Gaza and Ukraine.
“Sally Becker has repeatedly gone where others will not go,” said a spokesperson for the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative.
“Her unwavering courage, resilience and compassion embody the spirit of the Aurora Prize.”
The prize ceremony will take place this evening in New York, where the 2025 Aurora Laureate will be announced.
