The government has announced a price increase in UK applications for British passports and this increase is set to come as of April 11th 2024 if the plan see’s parliamentary approval. Currently the price for an adult application is £82.50 however this will rise to £88.50 – which is more than a 7% increase. Applications for anyone under 16 will jump from £53.30 to £57.50.
The price will also rise for people applying for British passports from overseas to £112.50 for adults and £77 for children.
This follows a rise of around 9% last year.
The government website issued a statement from the Home Office stating,” The new fees with help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation.”
“The fees contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas, including lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders.”
Despite the prices going up seemingly marginally, some people are worried that they will struggle to renew their passports in the future. Dan Kirollos, a University student looking to go abroad next year said,” I know on paper the prices have not jumped up by a huge amount, but when you’re budgeting so rigidly, it does make a difference.”
“I have booked flights and a hotel and the last thing I need to do is renew my passport… I’m not going to be able to do that before the increase…. So it’s just frustrating that because I don’t have the money now, I will have to save that bit extra.”
