True West @ New Venture Theatre

“I wanted to write a play about double nature and give a taste of what it feels like to be two-sided. I think we’re split in a much more devastating way than psychology can ever reveal.”

Sam Shepard

Austin, a successful screenwriter, is working on a movie project for a Hollywood producer, Saul, while house sitting for his mother who is vacationing in Alaska. When his estranged older brother Lee, a drunken petty thief, unexpectedly arrives to stay, the two engage in a lethal battle of wills. Sam Shepard remains one of the most celebrated, prolific and important playwrights of his generation. A coruscatingly funny and violent portrayal of sibling rivalry, True West stands at the forefront of his outstanding body of work.

This will be Steven O’Shea’s seventh production as a director for the New Venture Theatre following Speed the Plow by David Mamet (2011), Kvetch by Steven Berkoff (2012), Old Times by Harold Pinter (2014), Hamlet by Shakespeare (2015), Loot by Joe Orton (2016), and The Homecoming by Harold Pinter (2017).

Cast includes Will Cooper, Stuart Lee, Martin Ryan & Janice Jones.

Performances at 7.45pm.

Clay Club is our Saturday morning adult with child creative time in our ceramics studio.  There is always a weekly tutored theme that can range from making rockets to egg cups and everything in between. Our young makers learn basic clay techniques like coiling, slabbing draping and joining. The emphasis though is to learn by having fun in a supportive environment.

Each learning block is for four Saturdays and costs £32.00 payable in advance. If we have space we can still accommodate drop in students, but please call on 01273 72 82 82 to avoid disappointment. One off visits are charged at £12.00 per student + firing / glazing.

At the end each session you can either take home what you have made and leave it to dry, painting it later with acrylic paint or opt to have one piece fired . If you you would like to have your piece fired and return to glaze at a later date, please add £10.00

Each session starts promptly at 10.45 am and runs through to 12.00 midday including five minutes tidy up time.  If parents opt to make something as well, it is charged at the same rate as the children.

If you would like further details please call Adam or Gillian on 01273 72 82 82.

Aimed at children 4-11, materials and tools included to complete the weekly theme with additional clay available to purchase if required. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

Cost £32 per child for 4 weeks.

iRefugee: Should I Stay or Should I Go? @ The Old Courtroom

Local charity Refugee Radio is teaming up with Hear Alkebulan to bring a Question Time-style panel of experts to debate the issue of asylum and immigration in Brighton next Saturday.

But this time the experts will be people who have been through the asylum system themselves, including a former child soldier and a teenager from the Sussex Syrian community.

The organisers say they want to create a debate about why refugees have to leave their countries in the first place and what happens to them if they reach Brighton. Luqman Onikosi says “Brighton wants to be a safe refuge for people fleeing wars and persecution, but is the government trying to create a hostile environment instead? We are inviting members of the public to come to the event and pose their own questions to the panel on anything from detention and deportation to Calais and Brexit.”

The event will be chaired by Jacob Berkson, one of the speakers at last years’ Brighton TEDx talks. The panel will also feature Brighton-based filmmaker, Medyan Daireih, who infiltrated Islamic State for Vice News, as well as other refugees alongside Andrew Wealls, Conservative councillor for Central Hove.

New year | Letting go with grace De-Stress Yoga workshop with Charlotte Watts @ Brighton Natural Health Centre

Our lives, bodies and minds go through continual and natural cycles of gathering and letting go. The ‘new year resolution’ can often have the effect of forcing these issues when we may not be ready and give ourselves a hard time when they don’t stick! This workshop uses breath, yoga postures and mindfulness meditation to explore what we’re truly ready to release and be present for the process of clearing out ready to make space for what the coming year might bring.

Open, breathe, relax, let go…. These meditative and deep monthly workshops are suitable for anyone needing to make space and time to breathe deeply, reconnect with their bodies and still their minds. You will experience practical antidotes to the stresses of modern life – from the postural issues of sitting on chairs and hunching over computers to the ‘busy brain’ effects of constant stimulus and psycho-social pressure. Each workshop will have different content.
Suitable for all levels and a great complement to a more dynamic practice.
