Washed Out Festival Opening Party
Over Friday and Saturday at seven venues, 68 bands will be playing in Brighton this weekend for Washed Out Festival. It’s £20 for a whole host of emo, pop-punk and indie spread over The Green Door Store, The Quadrant, The Prince Albert, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, The Hope & Ruin, The Pipeline and East Street Tap. On Friday there is the opening party at the Quadrant pub by the clock tower. Local indie legends Beachtape are headlining the Quadrant after it was announced initial headliners Birdskulls have unfortunately split (RIP). There’s so many bands playing it would unfair to name some and not others so check out their Facebook page for more info on the festival itself. Get down early on Friday as Beachtape are great and Quadrant shows are known to be busy and rowdy, don’t miss your chance.

Friday Lunchtime Meditations
This Friday join the people at Bodhisattva Kadampa Meditation Centre from 12:30-1 for a relaxing opportunity to create some inner peace to empower your mind for the rest of the day. The classes include a brief introduction and guided meditation and at only £2 a class it’s the perfect way to spend your lunchtime. They also have a wonderful little cafe ‘World Peace Cafe’ where you can grab some soup or quiche for lunch too. Relax yourself into the weekend…

Loz Speyer’s Inner SpaceÂ
Loz Speyer are touring with their album INNER SPACE and this Friday they are coming to The Verdict Jazz Bar. They a jazz of “rare warmth and immediacy” and combine rhythmic tones with references from New Orleans, Bebop and Free Jazz laced throughout their music. “Each piece evolves its own form, its own balance of structure and freedom, its own atmosphere”. They come to the Verdict on the first night of their 11 date tour which has been supported by the Arts Council England.

Being Brahms
This is the story of a 20th century dad, his son and Brahms and is being shown the Rialto Theatre this Friday night. Multi-award winning Gail Louw blends a heartfelt story of the love and bond between father and son and the music of classic composer, Johannes Brahms in a one-man drama. In the synopsis of their own piece they say “Anton does his best but it’s a heartless and tough world out there – what with the Nazis, internment, a loveless marriage and a son he can’t communicate with. Being Brahms is a much better option, a world of soothing lullabies and the lovely Clara Schulmann to drool over, a world where everything seems so much clearer”. Tickets are available here.

Local Record Store/Platform B takeover
This Saturday at Pop-Up Brighton, Local Record Store are being taken over by Platform B for a day of all-femme DJ’s. On both Saturday and Sunday from 12-5pm you can catch some of the best young radio shows and DJ’s spinning some gal-power bangers. Platform B are a local, youth led and run radio station, normally broadcast from Green Door Store. Local Record Store are at Pop-Up until 22nd April so it’s worth checking out the other events happening too.

Roger Stevens Book Launch for Apes to ZebraÂ
This Saturday afternoon from 2-3pm join the brilliant Roger Stevens as he launches his new book ‘Apes to Zebras’. Stevens will be performing some of his poems from the book and will talk to those who come about the process and fun he had whilst writing it. Additionally, you will get taught how to create your own shape poems. The event is perfect for 6+ year olds and is free but you have to book!

Drawings of Dogs That Belong to Homeless IndividualsÂ
This is perhaps the most ‘Brighton’ event we have seen for a while. Sam Toft and the man behind the 11,000 follower-strong page ‘Drawings of Dogs’ are holding an exhibition in…phone boxes! The wonderful project comes after Toft worked alongside the Little Mustard Shop to create The Dog & Bone Gallery in Powis Park. The gallery was created as an inventive second-use for the defunct phone boxes. The project is going on all over April but on Friday night, Sam and Drawings of Dogs are hosting a ‘private view’ with some beers and a chance to see the four drawings the day it opens. They have asked that if you would like to make a donation, to go to StreetVet or Dogs on the street London. They’re going for pints after so if you’re in the mood to meet new people or just really love dogs, this is the best way to spend your Saturday night!

Brighton MarathonÂ
Brighton Marathon is on this weekend! Check out our article for full details but expect 12,500 people running the marathon and the BM10K. In the past few years over 150,000 have come out to cheer on the runners so head down to one of the entertainment points for your chance to join in with festivities.
Brighton Wine & Gin FestivalÂ
This week has been Wine Week in Brighton. As an early part of Brighton & Hove Food Festival, this Sunday they are hosting a mini-festival at the stylish Merkaba and function rooms of My Brighton hotel. There will be tastings of wines from local vineyards, Sussex gins with Double Dutch mixers, wines from other leading world regions and Vranken Pommery Champagne. It’s running from 2-5pm and is £10 a ticket.
