With May just beginning and the Fringe kicking off, there are a plethora of events on in Brighton and Hove this weekend. We’ve selected a few of our favourites for you to choose from.

How Disabled Are You? @ Brighthelm Centre, Friday 3rd of May

To explore the damage that throwaway negative comments have on people with disabilities, disabled writer and performer Tommy (AKA The Queer Historian), has created a show where three disabled people take to the stage and read out comments like these to a live audience. These people have no previous experience in performance. Find out more about this show here.

Spiegeltent Opening Night @ Old Steine, Friday 3rd of May

It’s finally that time of year!! Head down for the Spiegeltent’s free opening night, to celebrate their sixth year in Brighton. There are three free events on this Friday: Help I Think I Might be Fabulous at 7.30pm,
Gypsy Disco Presents: The Rebels Ball at 9pm-2am (super party)
and Pamela’s Palace at 9.30pm. Headblush Glitta Bar will also be on site, to get everybody in the festival spirit. Summer is beginning…

Patterns Summer Launch @ Patterns, Saturday 4th of May

For this years summer terrace makeover Patterns are teaming up with local artists ART+BELIEVE. Head down for an al fresco bottomless brunch in the morning, a beach cafe lunch, and DJ Terrace takeovers in the evening.

Caged Birds Do @ The Brighthelm Centre, Saturday 4th of May

Caged Birds do is an event celebrating the life and work of
Maya Angelou. The evening will involve a hybrid show of poetry and songs from the Porgy & Bess songbook, and will headlined by Black British writer, singer and activist Zena Edwards alongside poets Hibaq Osman, Laurie Ogden and Bridget Minamore

Smokey Oak BBQ @ Holler, Sunday the 5th of May

Head down to Holler Brewery for a smokey oak barbecue. Enjoy oak smoked brisket and pulled pork cheeks, or a vegan mushroom mole. What a perfect way to spend a sunny Sunday.
