Detoxes are common this time of the year, and though some of them may have their benefits, this one definitely does not. Before we go further, Bjournal cannot stress enough that we do not recommend you try this. Ever. Just don’t do it.

Herbal Womb Detox Pearls are currently being sold worldwide by Embrace Pangaea, a Florida-based firm who claim that these products can help with conditions including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, thrush and fibroids. These bags of perfumed herbs can be bought in one or two month packages, and can cost between $75 (£52) and $480 (£335). They are to be used three at a time, for 72 hours and claim to ‘cleanse the womb and return it to a balanced state’ by flushing out toxins. In a blog post, the company said the pearls could be issued in the same way natural solutions like oranges and lemons can be used to counteract a cold.

The thing is, they don’t work. Not only are they ineffective but doctors have warned against anyone using them saying that they could also be dangerous. Health experts have warned that using these ‘pearls’ can cause irritation and even toxic shock syndrome, which can potentially be fatal. Dr Jen Gunter is a US gynaecologist who has written a blog post debunking the company’s claims. She says that these products have not been tested for vaginal use and that putting anything like this up there, can cause infection.

Tamieka Atkinson is the owner of Embrace Pangaea and she told the Independent: “Our product is not a drug by any means, and we make no claims of curing, diagnosing, or treating disease. Embrace Pangaea is a holistic company that provides high-quality herbal detoxes and information to educate clients about natural living. Our Herbal Womb Detox Pearls is simply a natural herbal alternative that women can make a conscious and informed decision in using. With all our clients, we do advise them that we are not medical professionals, and that they should seek assistance from their doctor. As for our products doing more harm than good, there are various women that received positive benefits from using our product”. One blogger tried the detox pearls and claimed that the experience was “life changing”, however, it should be noted that she also changed her diet during said detox and cut out caffeine and sugar which is probably the real reason she felt so great. Though she may say it was “life changing”, it’s best to follow every health expert’s advice and to not even go near those things. Ever. We aren’t even going to provide a link to these things because they are such a bad idea.
