It can feel the office walls are closing in on you, can’t it? Perhaps your employees have grown in such significant numbers that you can no longer fit in your current premises or maybe you have so much stock that it is bursting out of the store cupboard.

But what do you do if you can’t afford to move to bigger premises or you are tied into a long lease that you can’t get out of?

There is nothing worse than trying to work in a space that just isn’t big enough. It won’t only result in your employees losing morale, it could also mean a loss of productivity.

If this sounds familiar, how are you going to find the space you so desperately need? Have you considered alternative ways to expand your business premises? These won’t expand the physical space you work from, but you may find that they do give you the space you need…

1.Hot-desking

How about hot-desking? This is where, rather than giving each worker their own desk, you allocate desks to workers when they are required or on a rota system. To help this work, you could introduce flexible working so that as long as employees work their required hours each day, the time they do it in is up to them – usually this means starting between 8 and 10am and finishing between 4 and 6pm.

Likewise, if the job role allows it, you could offer the opportunity to do a certain amount of days a month working from home – freeing up more desks in the office and also allowing your staff to fit these days in when they might help them the most. Plus, hot desking can cut the costs of running an office by up to 30% – bonus!

2. Co-working space

This is very similar to hot desking, but it’s where you share office space with other businesses. These are flexible allowing you to rent by the day, month or year. So you can find space for those extra staff members, without having to move your entire workforce into a new building. Share with like-minded people and it could also be a very good networking opportunity, which could only be beneficial to your company. Similarly, you could look for a space like this to hold your meetings as many of these buildings have large rooms they can rent out for this reason.

3. Invest in a storage unit

Have you considered renting a storage unit? Many storage companies have a specific set up for businesses, enabling you to add on extras such as power outlets and lighting, mailboxes and post receiving service – including a receipt and dispatch service which means you won’t need to be on-site to sign for deliveries or be waiting for a courier to pick up items – for example. Some small firms run their businesses solely out of storage units, but it could just be somewhere to keep stock of those items you need but are currently just taking up space. Units start as small as 8 sq ft or the size of a locker and go up to 2,000 sq ft, bigger than a tennis court!

These are just a few ideas, but it should put your mind at ease to know that you do have options! Now you just have to work out which one is best for you and your business.
