Feminism, LGBT rights and an open protest against Russia’s current President Vladimir Putin. That’s what Moscow-based punk rock band Pussy Riot is known for. With their new performance “Riot Days”, the band is ready to bring a breath of their protest culture to the UK. In November, they will also be performing at The Haunt in Brighton.

“Riot Days” is the title of Pussy Riot member, Maria Alyokhina’s memoir which traces the group’s troubled past. The book will be released in September this year and inspired their new performance of the same name. The show they will take on tour combines punk and electronica with elements of theatre and documentary footage, spiced with a decent portion of protest.

The protest collective first managed to attract global attention back in 2012 when three of their members were imprisoned for their performance inside Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The performance was meant to be a protest against the Orthodox Church’s support for Putin but the band was blamed for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”.

Ever since their release in December 2013, Pussy Riot are more politically active than ever before. For their “Riot Days” tour, Pussy Riot members Maria Alyokhina, Nastya and Olga team up with AWOTT (Asian Women On The Telephone) musician Max and Kyril Mashenka, Maria’s stage partner in the contemporary theatre production “Burning Doors”.

Pussy Riot will be at The Haunt in Brighton on Sunday, November 19. The show will start at 7 pm. Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 9 am.
