Loneliness can be extremely hard at any time in life, especially as we become older. Switchboard is an organisation that helps Older LGBTQ people with regular activities and support. The Project is working hard on tackling the core issues that older LGBTQ people face in their daily life.

The Project has successfully raised £2,355 with the help of 46 supporters within 31 days. According to the Project leaders ‘older LGTQ people are more likely to live alone and less likely to have family support, partners and children to care for them as they age and help them stay connected to other’. The weekly meetings and activities help their moral and balances their mood. Older LGBTQ members of our society can struggle with connecting with others for several reasons. The predominant reason is acceptance and the consequences of ageing, such as losing friends and health problems.
‘I can truly be myself here without worrying or deciding if I am going to have to come out to someone who might not accept me’
‘I know I can see a friendly face I can talk to’

The community and the strength that the group has created has had a massive impact on more than 300 members of the LGBTQ community in Brighton & Hove. The opportunities to make real friendships and to feel heard are the core of this Project. The path to acceptance of different sexual orientations and identities has come a long way but it is not finished yet.
‘Many have kept their gender identities and sexualities hidden from their neighbours, health care professionals and other services they use’

The Project suffered cuts to their budget, and they needed help with Transport. The group organises regular picnics and visits to the countryside and hiring a minibus was a must. Other support included personal support (new employee) and refreshments. The group tries to make refreshments free for everyone to ensure a good time for all members of the community. Finally, volunteer expenses were also on the list in order to ensure as much help as it was possible. Thankfully to the amazing community of Brighton & Hove funds were raised and the crowdfunding campaign was a massive success.
