Albion Win at the Etihad But Are They Title Contenders?

For the first time in their history, Brighton & Hove Albion have won at the Etihad. Yasin Ayari’s 11th-minute goal gave Fabian Hürzeler’s side a 1-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday. It lifted Albion to third in the Premier League, two points behind City and five behind leaders Arsenal.

How They Did It

This wasn’t classic Brighton. City had 61% of the ball and 19 shots, eight of them winning corners. Albion managed just seven shots. But they took their chance. Matheus Nunes miscued a clearance, and Ayari punished him with a finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

After that, it was all about Bart Verbruggen. The Dutch keeper made seven saves, including a stoppage-time stop from Jérémy Doku, to protect the lead. Hürzeler admitted his side had expected “to suffer” and praised his players’ “defensive mindset”. City manager Enzo Maresca said his team “did enough to deserve something”, but it was their second straight league defeat.

Real Contenders?

The numbers make a serious case. Brighton have taken 19 points from nine games, and Ayari’s winner made it six wins. They have beaten Arsenal 3-0, thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 and Crystal Palace 5-0, and now won at City. They have also scored freely, putting five past Coventry. Their only defeats came at Chelsea (4-3) and Liverpool (2-0).

The caution is depth. Arsenal and City have bigger squads for the winter grind, and Brighton’s busy December includes trips to Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Tottenham. A top-four finish and Champions League football look realistic. A title challenge would need Albion to keep this up into the spring.

The next few weeks look kind. Brentford visit the Amex on Sunday, followed by Hull away and Newcastle at home.

Brighton Local

For the city, the timing is welcome. The Amex is already full every week. A title push, or even a return to Europe, would bring more visitors, more spending and more pride to Brighton and Hove. Not long ago, Albion fans celebrated a 3-0 win over Roma. Now nights like that feel possible again.

The Bottom Line

One result doesn’t make a title challenge, but this is a team that has beaten Arsenal and City in the same season. Under Hürzeler and Tony Bloom’s long-term model, Brighton have earned the right to be taken seriously. Third place in November is no fluke.
