Stop the War Brighton and Hove (STWBH) protested outside Hove Town Hall on Wednesday to show solidarity with Palestine and demand a permanent Gaza ceasefire.

STWBH members and protesters delivered postcards with ceasefire messages designed by local children to Hove Labour MP Peter Kyle’s office, whom they claim has not called for a permanent Gaza ceasefire.

STWBH also organised walkouts at the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex and a protest outside local arms factory L3Harris on Wednesday, which produces parts for Israeli warplanes.

Manus McGrogan, STWBH organiser, said: “The International Court of Justice has found plausible that Israel has committed genocide. However, the killing is also enabled by Western politicians’ and arms companies’ support for Israel.

“An immediate and permanent ceasefire is desperately needed to bring an end to the death and suffering.”

These demonstrations were part of a workplace day of action for Palestine organised by Stop the War Coalition (STWC) and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

STWC and CND called on people in work, college, or university to stand with Palestine by participating in collective action such as a walkout or protest.

Manus McGrogan, said: “We wish to show our solidarity with the people of Gaza, to further raise the profile of our movement in trade unions, workplaces, and colleges, and to have our MP Peter Kyle call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.”

The National Education Union, the University College Union, the Public and Civil Servants, and the Brighton and Hove Trades Union Council supported this action.

Bella Sankey, council leader, said: “The loss of life in Palestine and Israel is harrowing, and we know that the conflict is causing huge distress across the world and among residents in Brighton and Hove.

“Our thoughts are with the children, families, and communities that have experienced devastating loss. We are particularly mindful of our Jewish and Palestinian residents who have family and friends caught up in the conflict.

“The council passed a motion at our Full Council last December calling for the release of all hostages and an immediate ceasefire.

“We also reaffirmed our commitment to be a City of Sanctuary, where we will not tolerate anti-semitism, Islamophobia, the glorification of terrorism or hate in any form.”
