Around the World in 80 Days has opened at the Devonshire Park Theatre where it plays now until 27 August, and it’s leaving audiences feeling on top of the world!
Theatre-goers have been swept along on this whistle-stop journey, this creative re-telling of the classic story features music, comedy and numerous costume changes, the frenetic pace was maintained throughout and the rapturous applause at the end of shows is deafening.
The cast of 7 recreate over 100 characters with seamless ease. The hardest of hearts can’t help but be captivated by this ode to Theatre. Everything about this production has care and attention poured into it. The cast deliciously break the 4th wall after the interval in a ridiculously funny madcap manner.
The travelling party of three is led by Nicholas Maude as the ambitious Phileas Fogg who takes on this most impossible of tasks, Freny Nina Parvi is Mrs Aouda the intrepid heroine with Ben Cutler as Passepartout who acrobatically steals the show with physical dexterity!
The brilliantly funny Ben Roddy is the delightfully incompetent Inspector Fix and the rest of the cast, who take on the dizzyingly complex number of roles includes; Harry Hart, Hannah Boyce (who displays a glorious singing voice) and James Cooney.
The creative team led by director Chris Jordan have created a seamless and thoughtful version of this classic story with attention to detail at its core, design by Julie Godfrey is clever and the movement director Julia Cave has created something quite special from the clockwork precision of the opening scene to the finale, which is especially inspired but you’ll have to see the show to find out why.
The creative team also includes lighting design by Chris Davey, costume team led by Shelley Claridge, with sound design from Charlie Tippler.
