Brighton Albion’s away game at Huddersfield Town this weekend is being interrogated amid accusations of homophobic chants.

According to reports, Brighton’s 2-1 win away at Kirklees Stadium, home ground of the Huddersfield team, was met with chants of a homophobic and derogatory nature from Town fans.

This incident arose on the weekend the Premier League launched the start of the Rainbow Laces campaign, which demonstrates support for the LGBT community across all teams.

Stuart Matthews, who set up the Proud Seagulls support group at the beginning of the season, said: “What happened at the weekend was pure evil. It was a minority, and we were told that some Huddersfield fans walked out in disgust.”

Proud Seagulls is the Brighton & Hove Albion LGBTQ+ support group set up to tackle and eradicate homophobic abuse and chants at football matches, to create a safe and inclusive space.

Mr Matthews credited Huddersfield for making a statement and taking action on the matter.

In a statement, Huddersfield emphasised this behaviour will not be taken lightly and fans could receive banning orders:

“It is totally abhorrent and an affront to the overwhelming majority of the club’s fantastic supporters.

“Huddersfield Town is extremely proud of its reputation as an inclusive club and the behaviour of a few individuals will not be allowed to tarnish this.”

Huddersfield Town was reduced to a ten-man team towards the end of the first half after Steve Mounie was sent off despite Mathias Jørgensen scoring in the first minute.
