Book clubs have often been associated with suburban housewives who have plenty of time on their hands. However, that’s not the case and book clubs are a great way of getting to meet new people, exploring new ideas and new points of view and of course, reading great books. Book clubs can be for everyone, and there are so many in Brighton that prove just that.
Books, Actually: Books, Actually originally started as an all-female book club based in Hove. Now, however, they welcome women from all over Brighton and have upheld the traditional of drinking a glass of bubbly at each book club. Whoever hosts the book club gets the privilege of choosing which book to read and they read a variety of books, from classics such as Persuasion by Jane Austen to Mary Berry’s Autobiography.
The Brighton Book Club: Probably the biggest book club in Brighton, this club has a long list of books that they refresh twice a year. The club meets monthly and anyone can suggest a book to add to the list. Radical Book Club: This book club is perfect for the radical reader. The group meet every six weeks and each person brings a vegetarian friendly dish to put in the pot luck whilst you discuss a book that is either to do with the environment, politics or activism.
Library Reading Groups: Of course, we have plenty of libraries in the Brighton and Hove area that have plenty of book clubs that you can join, or will help you start your own. From reading aloud groups to gay and lesbian book clubs, the library will surely have something for everyone!
