Brighton College’s application extend its existing drama provisions for his students has gone under consideration by city council officials as of Wednesday 6th October.

The Planning Committee officers had backed the plans by the school to create a new performing arts centre as part of its ongoing campus redevelopment.

The private school’s current proposal would see the creation of a brand new 400 seat theatre, performance studios and multiple new classrooms as part of the grand expansion that has seen the culmination of a ten-year master plan for the redevelopment of the school’s facilities.

While the entire college campus is marked as an area of conservation and the main facilities are grade II listed, none of the buildings set to be replaced by the new plans are listed and permission has already been granted by Brighton and Hove City Council to demolish them to make way for this new structure.

The buildings set to be removed are the 1980’s Lester building, the 1950’s science block and the current performance arts centre that was built in 2000.

The new proposal has been stated by the planning agents to be an exciting proposal that with greatly improve and enhance the learning experience for the pupils within the performing arts classes and also provide further spaces to break and relax.

The current buildings are not fit for the purpose required by the college and therefore the new plans serve as a significant upgrade that better fits within its surroundings.

The design is set to provide a suitable scale, mass and shape that keeps it in line with the other buildings, with a high-quality contemporary feel that will also bring a strong presence to the campus.

Residents were opposed to the plans, due to the fact that construction noise, parking problem and constant disruption has been an ongoing problem for years.
