Brighton Fringe 2021 Opens On Friday 28 May

Brighton Fringe 2021 launches this Friday 28 May, with more than 550 events taking place in venues across the city as well as online. With over 25,000 tickets sold already, it’s set to be an action-packed month ahead.

You can get a flavour of this year’s festival at Fringe City, a free outdoor showcase event taking place on 28 May (17:00 – 20:00), 29, 30 May (12:30 – 20:00) in Jubilee Square. Highlights from the programme include lots of local talent including award-winning Drag Prince Alfie Ordinary who is bringing his House of Fun to Brighton Spiegeltent this year. Boogaloo Stu will also be appearing at the Brighton Spiegeltent with legendary club night Dyanamite Boogaloo for one night only.

There’s comedy from local funny people too with the return of Komedia’s popular nights Krater Comedy ClubBent Double and Comic BoomFunny That Comedy also pops-up at The Warren with Brighton’s own award-winning MC Stephen Grant alongside Angela Barnes.

There is theatre from award-winning playwright Sam Chittenden whose Clean: The Musical (appearing both digitally and live at One Church Brighton) tells the tales of women of laundry hill area, Brighton since 1870. There is new work from local companies Paradoxical Frog, who are premiering The True Story Of The Little Girl Who Thought She Was The Second Coming Of Jesus Christ at Sweet Old Steine, and Skye Hallam presents her debut one-woman show Heads or Tails that is taking place at The Living Record, a new digital venue at Brighton Fringe.

The Living RecordtheSpaceUK and SweetStream have set up as digital ‘venues’ at Brighton Fringe 2021  offering both live streamed events and those available to watch throughout the month. This includes ONCOMM Award-winning show SpaceXPat, ThickSkin’s ‘Theatre in VR’ presentation of Petrichor and Variations, a play about family, string theory and breakfast from The Young Creatives Portsmouth.

If outdoor is more your thing, there are plenty of opportunities to get to know the city of Brighton & Hove with walking tours to teach you about the Back Passages of BrightonFearless and Fabulous Women of Kemptown and Brighton’s Elms. There’s also outdoor theatre at St Ann’s Well Gardens including a production of Twelfth Night by Drama Impact, a return of Something Underground Theatre Company’s The Spirit of Woodstock and Storyland, a storytelling adventure for kids aged 3-6 by Brambledash Theatre.

There are also five free Fringe Academy workshops running through the month, with opportunities to hear from Fringe Directors and Producers from around the world and the chance to learn about touring work both online and offline from Touring Scheme Leaders. There is also the chance to share your views at the Future of Brighton Fringe event on 22 June.
