As thousands of drivers prepare for Easter getaways to the coast, newly released data shows that Brighton & Hove City Council generated more than £480,000 in parking charges from its coastal car parks in April 2024 alone.
The figures, obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by cinch, the UK’s leading online used car marketplace, reveal that motorists collectively paid £489,516.70 in parking fees across the city’s busiest coastal car parks during the peak holiday month.
The top three car parks by revenue were:
-
Regency Square – £263,872
-
Lanes Car Park – £171,088
-
King Alfred Car Park – £47,687
In addition to parking charges, the council also issued 76 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) at coastal car parks in April 2024, generating an extra £1,770 in fines. The King Alfred car park topped the list for enforcement, accounting for 72 of the 76 PCNs issued that month.
With similar levels of traffic expected this Easter, drivers are being urged to double-check parking regulations to avoid unexpected fines.
Sam Sheehan, Motoring Editor at cinch, said:
“If you’re thinking about a trip to the seaside this Easter, remember that it can be easy to get caught out by unfamiliar restrictions in nearby car parks.“To avoid the risk of unnecessary fines, it’s key for drivers to check local rules before they travel and park responsibly.”
As the Easter holiday brings increased footfall to popular coastal destinations, cinch advises all drivers to plan ahead, use digital parking tools where available, and stay mindful of time limits and signage.
