Leaked information discovered on the encrypted messaging platform Telegram has unveiled plans for coordinated riots across 38 towns and cities in the UK, including Brighton. The messaging has revealed that the rioters are targeting immigration law firms and asylum support centres within Brighton. The unrest is reportedly scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, 7 August, with Queens Road identified as the primary target area. The Times investigation has revealed that the chats are sharing an ‘arson manual’ and instructions on how to make petrol bombs at home. In response, local business owners and residents are being urged to steer clear of this location, prompting businesses to close early as a precaution.
Political leaders across Sussex have condemned the planned riots. Councillor Sankey emphatically stated, “Rioters are not welcome in Sussex.” Hastings MP Helena Dollimore added, “If you are thinking of coming here to cause division and disorder, you are not welcome.” Lewes District Councillor Boniface also expressed strong disapproval, stating that the council “strongly condemns the actions of rioters.” Councillor Sankey further assured that the local council is committed to ensuring that “all our communities feel safe, respected, and free.”
Law enforcement agencies are on high alert. A police spokesperson assured the public that they are “closely monitoring the situation” and are prepared to respond swiftly to any incidents. They urge that any sightings of racism or violence be reported to 101.
In a show of solidarity and resistance, the charity ‘Stand Up to Racism’ has organised counter-protests. These will take place outside the Clocktower on North Street at 7:30 PM on Thursday, 8 August. The organisation aims to “mobilise to defend immigration lawyers, refugee charities, and asylum support centres around Brighton.” The recent leak has also prompted further anti-hate counter protests to take place on Wednesday at the same time. The ‘Stand Up to Racism’ account on X provides more details about these events and the planned counter-rallies, following the hashtag #welcomerefugees. At a similar scenario in Cardiff, which took place earlier this week, anti-racism protestors significantly outnumbered the rioters – with one X account reporting that it was almost 100 to 1.
As Brighton braces for the potential unrest, the city’s leaders and citizens seem to be banding together to protect their threatened communities, upholding Brighton’s core values. It is important to urge that any and all protests remain peaceful to ensure the safety of our residents and citizens.
