Brighton has proudly been crowned the most vegan-friendly city in the United Kingdom, a title bestowed upon it by a comprehensive study conducted by train company LNER. The research, which meticulously analyzed Google search data, the abundance of vegan restaurants listed on HappyCow, and the availability of vegan takeaway options on Deliveroo across the 20 largest cities in the UK, has positioned Brighton at the forefront of the nation’s vegan scene.

The study, which assigned each city a score out of 100 based on the gathered data, reveals Brighton’s stellar performance with an impressive score of 86.9. The top 10 most vegan-friendly cities also include Manchester (64.9), Bristol (59.9), Edinburgh (54.5), London (39.4), Glasgow (33.9), York (33.0), Liverpool (25.5), Cardiff (23.7), and Reading (22.8).

The study highlights the burgeoning interest in veganism across the UK:

  • Veganism is on a steady rise, with searches for vegan restaurants increasing by a substantial 82% since 2021.
  • London, securing the fifth spot in the rankings, offers a remarkable 178 vegan restaurants and holds the record for the most vegan takeaway options (48).
  • Glasgow and Edinburgh have experienced a doubling of searches for vegan restaurants in the last two years.

Richard Judge, Head of Customer Experience at LNER, shared his thoughts on the findings, stating, “Our research has shown that searches for vegan terms have increased by more than 80 per cent since 2021, revealing a growing interest in veganism in the UK.”
