From the 30th September, Brighton will be holding it’s biggest ‘Ageing Well Festival’ so far. As we know, there are so many stigmas towards the concept of ageing. But this festival grates upon our society where everything points towards the significance of youth.

So many strive to hinder the effects of appearing ‘old’, so Brighton has decided to celebrate it instead. Who says ageing has to be a negative experience? People are living longer lives than ever due to the advancement in medicine, technology and nutrition. Therefore, there is a significant growth in the older population across the world. A world in which each culture cultivates different views on ageing.

Different Cultural Perceptions of Ageing

In Japan growing old is very much admired. This view is especially prominent in their national holiday which is dedicated to respecting their elders. During which, volunteers provide hampers or bento lunches. Not forgetting the light-hearted performances children put on for the older members of their community.

While this is how Japan show their appreciation towards the older generation, the Huaorani people of Ecuador have a completely different perception of their elders. They believe that they are shaman healers with magical powers who can cure disease.

However, when it comes to our own culture, there tend to be dated and negative stereotypes towards ageing. Although, there is no reason why we can not embrace it and celebrate living a long life.

The Benefits of the ‘Ageing Well Festival’

The ‘Ageing Well Festival’ is a step towards creating more positive perceptions when it comes to growing older. We don’t have to long for our youth, but enjoy what is going on around us and take part in all the festival has on offer.

There is an array of music, art, food, talks, tours and so much more. The organisers have packed the two weeks full of every kind of entertainment. They have planned with precision to ensure it is the best celebration possible, with more than fifty venues hosting the events.

So, why not enjoy growing older and join in on Brighton’s big celebration, where there is something for everyone to be a part of.
