As expected, Brighton and Hove Albion moved on the final day of the transfer window to secure three new faces, although one big hole was still left in the squad.
At 11.01pm on Tuesday Night, The Seagulls had secured the signings of Enock Mwepu, Kjell Scherpen and Marc Cucurella to bolster their first team squad.
While Scherpen and Mwepu had signed during the window, defender Cucurella is a key addition to the team and is a solid step in the right direction.
The 23-year-old wing back has been a long-standing target with rumours circling for a long time as questions existed whether Brighton would be able to do a deal below his buyout clause.
Instead, Graham Potter triggered the £15 million price with Getafe and has added a player who adds great depth to the wide areas, where he will serve as a pacey, exciting talent.
However, there is still much bigger focus on the players lost or missed than the new recruits signed up.
The biggest loss is Ben White’s £50 million transfer to Arsenal, where the developing England star has left a hole in the defence that has not been fixed, instead Potter proclaimed that the talent in the current squad would be enough to cover.
Other players who had previous first team experience such as Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Mat Ryan and others, were sold despite the needs in those departments.
The biggest hole that has existed throughout the whole of the summer and last season was the need for a more clinical attacking presence.
Whilst rumours came and went, so did Percy Tau, Florin Andone and Andi Zeqiri, losing three strikers without the recruitment of any replacements.
Darwin Nunez and Odsonne Edouard were both constantly linked to the club, with Edouard signing in the dying hours of the day to Crystal Palace and nothing ever seeming to materialise regarding Nunez, who is believed to have a price tag that wasn’t ever met by Brighton
The team will now only rely on Aaron Connolly, Neal Maupay and Danny Welbeck to lead the line, and only time will tell to see if the three will be able to achieve success this season.
